Healthy gums and a clean, fresh smile sit at the heart of every healthy mouth. Our gentle hygienists are here to look after yours with the same warmth Richmond families have trusted for over 30 years.

A dental hygiene appointment is a dedicated visit with one of our trained hygienists, focused entirely on the health of your gums, the cleanliness of your teeth, and the long-term care of your mouth. It sits alongside your routine dental check-up, but with its own purpose and its own pace.
During your visit, your hygienist will gently remove plaque and tartar (the hardened build-up that brushing alone can't shift), lift surface staining, and walk you through how to care for your teeth more effectively at home. Our hygienists Libby and Emily are well known across Richmond Hill, Kew and East Sheen for their calm, unhurried manner - and their genuine love for what they do.

Most people come to a hygiene appointment thinking about how their teeth look. That's completely understandable. There's nothing quite like that just-cleaned-teeth feeling. But the real value of seeing a hygienist sits a little deeper, beneath the surface.
Healthy gums are the foundation of every healthy smile. When gums are inflamed or bleeding, it's a sign that bacteria has quietly built up below the gum line. Left unchecked, this can progress to gum disease, which is the leading cause of tooth loss in UK adults.
Regular hygiene visits help to:

Some of the children whose teeth we cleaned in the late 1990s now bring their own children to see us. That kind of long-term relationship with a community isn't something we ever take for granted.
Our hygienists have built a quiet reputation across TW10 for being properly gentle, taking their time, and never making patients feel awkward about how long it's been since their last visit. Whether it's been six months or six years, you'll be welcomed in the same way.

We offer three different lengths of hygiene appointment, so you can choose the one that suits where your gums are right now.
Each appointment follows a similar gentle pattern. Your hygienist will start by carefully checking the health of your gums, then clean above and below the gum line using ultrasonic and hand instruments. Many patients then opt for Airflow (an additional £30) polishing as the finishing touch.

Airflow is one of those quietly brilliant bits of modern dentistry that changes how good a clean can actually feel. Instead of the gritty paste used in traditional polishing, Airflow uses a fine jet of warm water, air and ultra-fine powder to lift staining, plaque and discolouration without scraping or scrubbing.
It's particularly helpful for:
Most patients say it feels far gentler than they were expecting, and the results are visible the moment you sit up.

If the idea of a hygiene appointment makes your shoulders rise, please know you're far from alone. A surprising number of our patients tell us they've put off seeing a hygienist for years (sometimes decades) because of a previous bad experience.
Our hygienists are particularly known for their calm, gentle manner with anxious patients. We will always:
For patients with more significant anxiety, we also offer IV sedation with Dr Frances Carling-Thom, who has spent over 15 years caring for nervous patients.

Good habits start early, which is why we run a dedicated Toothbrushing Club for Children. For £85, your child gets a friendly, age-appropriate appointment focused on building confident brushing habits, gentle education about how teeth work, and a calm introduction to the dental chair.
It forms part of our wider children's dentistry offering, designed to help little ones grow up genuinely comfortable visiting the dentist - rather than dreading it.

For most patients, every six months works beautifully. Patients with healthy gums and excellent home care can sometimes get away with once a year. Patients with a history of gum disease, smokers, or those undergoing orthodontic treatment are often best seen every three to four months.
We'll always recommend the interval that's genuinely right for you, based on what we see in your mouth. There's never any pressure to come more often than you actually need to.

We're a fully private practice and we believe in transparent, upfront pricing. You'll always know what your appointment costs before you book.

Do I need a referral from my dentist to see a hygienist?
No, you don't. We offer direct access hygiene at Richmond Hill Dental, which means you can book straight in with our hygienists without needing to see a dentist first. That said, if it's been a while since your last check-up, we may gently suggest pairing your hygiene visit with a routine examination to keep on top of everything.
Will my hygiene appointment hurt?
It shouldn't. Most patients find their hygiene visit very comfortable, and Airflow polishing in particular is far gentler than traditional cleaning. If you have sensitive teeth or gums, please tell your hygienist at the start. We can adjust the technique, use desensitising products, or split the appointment into smaller stages.
How long does a hygiene appointment take?
Anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on what your gums need. New patients and those who haven't visited in a while are usually best suited to our 60-minute appointments. Regular patients often get on well with the 30-minute visit.
Can a hygiene appointment whiten my teeth?
A hygiene appointment will lift surface staining (from tea, coffee, wine and similar), which often leaves teeth looking noticeably brighter and fresher. It won't change the natural underlying shade of your teeth, though. For that, you'd want to look at tooth whitening, which we'd always recommend pairing with a hygiene visit beforehand for the best results.
What's the difference between a routine and a comprehensive visit?
The main difference is time and depth. A 30-minute routine visit covers the essentials and suits regular patients keeping on top of things. A 60-minute comprehensive visit gives your hygienist time to do a more thorough deep clean, address heavier staining or build-up, and spend longer on personalised home care advice.
My gums bleed when I brush. Should I book a hygiene appointment?
Yes, please. Bleeding gums are usually a sign of inflammation (gingivitis), which is the earliest stage of gum disease. The good news is that it's almost always reversible with professional cleaning and improved home care at home. The sooner you book, the easier it is to get on top of.
